Emphysema Life Expectancy Is Affecting Millions The fact is, the low life expectancy of emphysema is affecting millions of people worldwide. If we look just at the US alone, there is reason to be shocked. According to estimates, the disease has reduced the life expectancy of more than 2 million people in the country alone. And consider the widespread nature of the disease and the figures could be staggering. Most people who are affected are males and most of them are over the age of 65. But this does not mean that you are entirely safe if you are not a senior. Even children and those who are in pregnancy are often affected too. Emphysema does not even spare the animal kingdom. Canine emphysema is quite rampant, and the disease affects other animals too. Emphysema Life Expectancy And The Various Stages Of The Disease There are actually 4 stages of this disease and the risk factors increase with the stages. In other words, if the person is in the early stages when the diagnosis is made, he or she may be able to live for many years and even fight the conditions successfully. However if the diagnosis is made at an advanced stage, then it is obviously bad news because the life expectancy drops remarkably. So it is essential to have some information about the stages of emphysema. There are 4 distinct stages of the disease and they are: 1. Mild – stage 1 2. Moderate – stage 2 3. Severe – stage 3 4. Very severe – stage 4 Your doctor will ask you to take the pulmonary function tests or the PFT to determine your stage once you show the symptoms. The Spirometer will also be used to determine what percentage of air you can breathe out and the volume will also indicate the stage. Naturally, as has been explained above, while early stages are less serious, the advanced stages can be grave. So you should immediately approach your doctor as soon as you see the symptoms. Sometimes antibiotics are prescribed to cure the condition. Though antibiotics cannot cure the ailment and increase the emphysema life expectancy, but they can at least treat an infection in the lungs, which is quite common in the disease. You should also speak to your friends and family if you are affected and ask for their help and support. Reassure them that the disease is not contagous. |
